Ordering ModernTailor Suits?

CUSTOMER: 1. Are you able to create a three-button cuff, similar to Turnbull and Asser’s style?
MODERNTAILOR: We can create three-button cuff. Should you prefer a Turnbull and Asser’s style, please send us a photo of this so we can duplicate it.

CUSTOMER: 2. Are your pants linings also lined in the crotch?
MODERNTAILOR: No. The pants lining is only from the waist down to knee.

CUSTOMER: 3. Can I request the left over materials from the pants cutting to be sent with the pants?
MODERNTAILOR: Yes you may. Please indicate this in the notes section when you place the order.

CUSTOMER: 4. Can I choose from the fabrics in your suit section to have just pants made if I provide the fabric number?
MODERNTAILOR: Yes you may, but they would be pricier than the ones in our pants section. Please let us know the fabric number you’re interested in so we can give you a quote.

Choosing a Cut

There are 3 types of traditional suits:
1. American – natural shoulder suit – most conservative and made known by Brooks Brothers
2. British – slightly padded shoulders, follows the lines of the body, 2 side vents
3. Italian – slightly higher shoulders, fits the body more tightly, usually no vents

The more trendy emerging style is the Japanese style which is very slim fit, medium lapels, single vent at the back. This is typically worn by models and slim Asian men.

Delivery Expectations

ModernTailor’s corporate office is based in Michigan, USA, however, it has worldwide operations. The production unit is based in Shanghai, China while the customer service department is based in the Asia Pacific region.

Customers who order online may expect their orders to be finished and delivered to their home addresses within 21 business days. This is ample time for Moderntailor to create the shirt/suit. Moderntailor uses EMS for regular worldwide delivery. It takes 10 to 15 business days for EMS to deliver products in any location worldwide. The cost is $10 per item. For a faster delivery option, ModernTailor also uses Fedex and DHL. The expected delivery time is within 5 business days, worldwide. The cost of delivery per shirt is $18, $8 more than the standard EMS.

Some customers prefer to send us their perfect fitting shirts to make sure that fit is perfect. In this case, the customer would have to handle cost of freight. They will also have to consider the time period the shirt is sent to Shanghai. Normally, the cost is $20 to $35 for the shirt to be delivered using EMS from USA. Of course, due consideration should be made on the weight/volume of the shipment. Upon receipt of the shirt, it would take approximately 21 business days to have the order delivered to the sender. This is longer but more accurate approach especially for first time users of online MTM services.

Ordering Shirts from ModernTailor: Basics

Here’s a few basics you’d need to know if you are interested in ordering ModernTailor custom tailored dress shirts.

1. Know your measurements. We advise that you take measures of an existing shirt that fits you well. We call this taking “shirt measurements”. You can choose to take shirt measurements as you design your shirt online. We follow the measurements you enter if you took the measurements from an existing shirts. This means we do not add any other allowances. The fabrics we use are pre-washed so there is very minimal (almost none) expected shrinkage. If you do not have a shirt that fits you well, then you can take your body measures. Here’s a guide on how to measure yourself. We add the following allowances when you take body measurements:

All our shirts are cut by hand. Our production tolerance standards are detailed below for “body measures”
Collar +- 0,5 cm total circumference
Shoulder length +-0,6 cm total length
Chest size +- 2,0cm Total circumference
Waist size +- 2,0 cm Total circumference
Hip size +- 2,0 cm Total circumference
Sleeve length +-1,0 cm Total length

2. Use a style that fits your features. This advise is most recommended for first time online buyers. Use a collar that will enhance your look, ie, if you have a round to square face, try to use elongated collars (eg button down). If you have a triangular built (big shoulders and tight waist), try to use split yokes for a back design or a box pleat at the back for more comfort.

3. Find the right fabric pattern. ModernTailor has more than 400 fabrics to choose from. It has the widest selection of fabric patterns online. If you prefer practical choices, pick blue/white stripes, or gray/white stripes which you can use for formal or casual occasions.

I ordered the short cutaway collar and it really didn’t look like the collar I was hoping for. Also, the points were a little too short. Based on my measurements, the points on some of my other shirts are in between the short and medium cutaway collar point lengths offered. Even with this slight discrepancy, I will definitely order shirts again when I need some more.

Shipping time was great. Most of the available options were also great. The only things I’d like to add are possibly a few more collar choices (although I see some were added recently), thicker MOP buttons and more information about fabric thickness.

Monograms on Dress Shirts

Monograms on your Modern Tailor dress shirt is just one way of adding a personal touch to your garment. There are 3 types of Monogram fonts you can use: BLOCK, CLASSIC & SCRIPT

You can add the monograms on your left pocket, on your left cuff or your bottom placket. You can decide what color of thread to use for your monogram. If you have a logo which you think can be easily embroidered to the locations I have specified above, then you can also upload it on your Modern Tailor control panel. I suggest that you choose a non-complicated logo so the style will not be compromised.
